Small Talks #4. Light and photography
October, 2026

Taking a picture of a lamp entails taking pictures of light using light.

This concept was the basis for Small Talk #4, which was held last week in our Milan store and focused on light and photography.

Paolo Ferrarini facilitated the conversation between three viewpoints on the same topic. The president and artistic director of the company, Emiliana Martinelli, offered the viewpoint of the individual who commissioned the picture.

Since the days of Elio Martinelli, Benvenuto Saba, a photographer and artist, has worked with Martinelli Luce for more than thirty years.
Omar Sartor, a design photographer, has photographed our products for Living.

The conversation spanned seventy years of design photography: from the shots of masters such as Aldo Ballo and Giorgio Casali—with whom the company has worked—to today’s images.

The debate examined whether the photographer's eye or the equipment make the biggest distinctions.

It concentrated on striking a balance between the needs of the customer and the photographer's artistic vision, as well as the connection between the lamp, the light it emits, and its surroundings.

Thanks to Benvenuto Saba, Omar Sartor, and Paolo Ferrarini for generously sharing their perspectives, and everyone who participated.
